The Speech Painter has been at the forefront of Performance Poetry for nearly 15 years and in that time he has explored and expanded the boundaries of stage poetry. From 1988- 1995 he was one half of the The Speech Painters - poetry's original double act and later he co-founded Atomic Lip, poetry's first pop group (1995-98). "A welcome cure for the aural anaemia of our times" Since 1995 he has also worked as a solo poet. In 2000 he staged his first one man show Beating Time - which combines a history of the twentieth century with the development of the wristwatch through ten unique stories. "a mean line in Glastonbury-gangsta rap" In 2002 along with Steve Tasane he launched Pure Poetry, London's latest poetry club. After its initial run in a pub venue they decided to up the ante. In 2004 The Speech Painter appeared on a Channel Four short which aired on Monday the 5th of January as the first of a series of four films. He performed "This Time Next Year" a poem based on the theme of New Year Resolutions. With a large range of material behind him ranging from the strangely comic to the deadly serious he is an electric and unmissable performer. He is the winner of several Slam competitions and is fearless in front of an audience, coming runner up on two occasions in "write it on the night" slams - where you have no time to hone and practice and just 5 minutes in the final round to write a poem based on the audiences ideas. Happy to perform, anywhere, anytime, he has supported musicians as well as poets up and down the country and has played in highly successful shows at Ronnie Scotts, Dingwalls and the 100 club. "pushes poetry over the edge"
